ZAMBIA and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) signed on Monday, June 29, 2015, a loan agreement for US$14 Million for the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program.
The loan agreement was signed by OFID Director General Suleiman J Herbish and Zambian Ambassador to Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Bwalya Chiti, who signed on behalf of the Zambian Government.
The US$14 million loan extended to Zambia will finance the rural populations in the Western Province with sustainable water supply and sanitation services by constructing and rehabilitating related infrastructure.
And speaking during the signing ceremony at the OFID headquarters in Vienna, Austria, Ambassador Chiti expressed the Government of Zambia's appreciation for the OFID's support and commended the valuable contributions that the OFID is making in Zambia, particularly in supporting basic services and in critical sectors such as infrastructure.
He also stated that the programme will have a great importance in improving the health and productivity of the beneficiaries by reducing the effects of water-borne and sanitation-related problems.
Ambassador Chiti added that the loan agreement signed showed a continuation of a long-established cooperation between Zambia and OFID in helping boost socio-economic development.
And Mr. Al-Herbish expressed satisfaction in signing an agreement that was aimed at enhancing socio-economic development.
Mr. Al-Herbish stated that OFID, whose aim is to stimulate economic growth and alleviate poverty in all disadvantaged regions of the world, has worked with Zambia and will continue to do so.
